Welcome
Back to The R2 Update

 By
Captain Mark Anderson
Region Two Chief of Communications
Greetings from the new Chief of Communications for Region 2. For those
who don't know me, which I'm thinking is most of the region. I haven't
been in Starfleet for very long, but I have been involved in fandom for over
20 years now. Time sure does fly when you are having fun. I have been
the commanding office of the USS Victorious for about 13 years now. I
have been a First Officer in four different clubs and a Captain three times
in two different clubs. I served in the U.S. Army for 11 years and
with moving ever two or three years, I would join a new chapter as an Ensign
move up to First Officer or Captain only to move and start all over again.
By profession I'm a Senior Network Engineer. Well enough about me, lets
move on the update.
With this being the first update in a while we are trying to get things
back up and
running again. I have published all the reports and articles I
received by the deadline. For the time being, we plan to do
this every two months. Our publication schedule is to release via
email and on the website on the 15th of the month on ODD months.
Deadlines for submissions are the 15th of the month on EVEN months for
inclusion in the next issue. We will be sticking with this routine until I
can get the Website updated for a different format. More on this later
in the article.
The updates to the Region 2 website Secondfleet.org are almost completed.
I am in the process of making the site a little more interactive where
articles can be posted in real time. Once all the work has been completed
and tested I will send out notices so everyone can check out the new
features. I have also added a new Goggle Region 2 Event
calendar. I am working to add all regional events to the
calendar. If you have an event
or birthday you would like to add, please email compops@secondfleet.org
and we'll get it
posted. Please check it out at
http://calendar.secondfleet.org
IRC meetings I have
only attended a few of these so far. logs of all
chats since I have taken office have been posted in on the Yahoo Groups files
section and on the Region 2 website under the archive section.
I am
revamping the R2 Website to make it more of a live news site. This at
some point will replace the R2 Update. Once I get the R2 Website work
completed we can work out the details on how we want the site to
function. My initial though is to keep a section live for posting for
60 days, then moving that section to the archive and start a new page. This
is just of course a work in progress and I'll keep everyone On the process.
In the short term If you have an article you would like to have published in the bimonthly R2
Update, Feel
fee to email me the article and pictures you would like to have published to
compops@secondfleet.org. News on the Richard
Daystrom Cyberspace Awards. The winners have been selected, my thanks
to Region One RC for the assistance in the judging. Superior

Towaway Zone

 by
Rear Admiral Jack "Towaway" Eaton
Region Two Regional Coordinator
Seems just like yesterday....
When we last left our merry band of
space pirates....
This has all happened before and it will all happen
again....
OK, get all of your "Gee, it's been so danged long since
the last R2 Update" and let's move one. The major reason for moving on is
that THIS is not your father's R2 Update. Even 10 years ago, a paper and ink
version of the R2 Update was the fastest way of keeping folks all over
Region 2 up on the latest happenings. But nowadays, we get emails and surf
the web on our phones and a gaggle of other electronic devices. We Trek fans
pride ourselves in being techies and it seems a perfect time for Region 2 to
take that next step.
This Update page will become yet another outlet
for information and news on what is happening in the Region. A number of us
are on the R2 List, but this will serve as a backup to announcements posted
there. On the flip side to that, there will be columns and information not
fond on the list. The plan is for this R2 Update page to become the virtual
newspaper website for the region. I leave the traditional begging and
cajoling for material to Mark.
Speaking of Mark Anderson; he stepped
up right after Summit and applied for this long vacant position and since
day one hot the ground running. He has done some house cleaning on the
website, tackled the Web and Newsletter Awards, worked on a Summit planning
committee and got this Update up and running. My great and loud thanks to
him for a job well done.
As I said, this Update page will become
what the name implies; a source of updated information. Mark is not the only
member of the R2 Staff working hard since March. DJ Allen and I are putting
finishing touches on an R2 Budget, word will be coming down soon on the 2011
Summit, the R2 Quartermasters Office is just about to re-open and I plan on
reporting on a regular basis from the International Conference in Oklahoma.
Watch for all that and more news right here.
Towaway Out........

Vice
Regional Coordinator Report

 By
Commodore Lucy Ferron
Region Two Vice Regional Coordinator
Hot enough for you yet?
Well, besides the heat, I’ve had another flash flood on my street.
It did not get inside my house fortunately but some of my neighbors
were not as lucky. The receding
water has left quite a lot of debris for me to clean up – and it happened on
my birthday! For a couple of
hours it was like living on an island surrounded by water.
And the smell left behind by flooding is mighty nasty.
The
R2 Board has discussed several issues in the period April through June.
Applicants for SFI JAG were reviewed
prior to the RC submitting a vote.
There were several very experienced and qualified candidates.
Wade Hoover was the victor as most of you know by now. Following
Wade’s selection, Jack inquired about the R2 AIG post and received word from
Wade that the present appointee would remain in place. The Board
was informed about the plans for the CS election discussion list and the
list moderator selected. The
Board was also requested to review the draft of the SFI Bylaws and submit
questions and concerns to the RC for forwarding to the AB prior to the
Bylaws being released to the general membership later this summer.
The
RC emailed a couple of times before receiving word this past week that
indeed the election for R2 Coordinator will take place this fall.
An exact timeline has not been established but we can expect that the
nomination period will begin sometime in September. We are all
pleased of course to finally have a new Chief of Communications and many
thanks go to Mark Anderson for jumping right in there and getting caught up
on website updates, newsletter and web awards processing, and even starting
the R2 Update again. Linda Olson
has been taking applications for the Awards Chief position and we should
soon have the office of R2 Quartermaster up and going again.
We are also really close to announcing plans for the 2011 Summit and
I’m excited already about the possibilities being presented for a unique
Summit experience! I hope you all have a good summer and find fun
ways to stay cool! (Anybody got an extra canoe?)Commodore Lucy

Greetings from 'Sweet Home Alabama'.
Summer time is upon us. :)
Several chapters have planned cookouts and/or pool parties. Hope we can
share the love within R2 and attend one of the great events.
Speaking
of great events, the city of Huntsville - actually the U.S. Space and Rocket
Center has a fantastic exhibit on hand. The Star Wars exhibit is on site now
through Sept. 6. I do know that there is a chapter or two planning on going
on Saturday, July 24 and another group going on Sunday, July 25. Spread the
word and see if we can get more in attendance. :) To see more information go
to the Center's web site
www.spacecamp.com/museum/
Another event is the STARFLEET
International Conference. I hope Region 2 comes away with some awards.
Thank you Jack for representing us and whoever else may be going from R2.
:):)
Take care and have the rest of a great summer.
